Phil 0100 Critical Reasoning
Course Objective
The objective of this course is to teach students to identify, understand, and evaluate arguments in philosophy and beyond. To this end, they are introduced to formal tools from propositional logic, which are then applied to reconstruct ordinary prose arguments into premise and conclusion form. Students then learn how assess these reconstructed arguments by evaluating the particular premises or inferences made. Example arguments from philosophy, law, science, mathematics, and op-ed pieces are used to underscore both the ubiquity of arguments and the importance of being able to articulate and assess them.
